Spring is in the air! The days are lasting longer, there are daffodils as far as the eye can see and London Fashion Week has been and gone so that can only mean one thing. It's time for the Spring/Summer collections to start filtering down to the High Streets and for us to start snapping up the key trends. That said, you might still be feeling the pinch from Christmas so in the spirit of all things thrifty, I am going to show you how to get this seasons key looks for less.
Prints – Prints are MASSIVE this season. And I mean that literally. Big prints are key. Whether it's a Tribal print, a Nordic print or a Nu Rave print, they are bigger and bolder than last season. Even cartoon chic is back with a bang so expect a nod back to the nineties with smiley faces and bright colours. Clashing prints is also a key look this season so don't worry to much if your outfit doesn't match. If anything, you'll just be right on trend. Here's my second hand spring collection that will give your wardrobe the wow-factor.
Pastels will be a popular choice this season. Whether it's chiffon, cotton or denim, the colours will be tastier than a sweetshop with sugary shades of pink, mint green and lilac. Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton took the lead on the runways with lovely pastel colours and high street shops are set to do the same. Pastels are perfect for spring and are extremely flattering even if its just a touch of colour somewhere in your outfit.
Ladylike chic – think prim and pretty and not to mention pleats. Chanel and Prada oozed ladylike styles this season with pastel colours, frills and appliqué. Orla Kielys SS12 show at London Fashion Week was the epitomy of this trend, especially when couples literally danced to ballroom music in the show. Fabrics will include lace, cottons and the odd bit of crochet here and there. This really is an understated chic look where you should let the clothes do the talking for themselves. Think simple and classic, just like these feminine finds.
With Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby finally due for release later in the year I can guarantee we'll all be channelling our inner flapper gal with drop waists, more fringing that you can shake a stick at and sequins galore! The 1920s trend will be a rip roaring success this season, yet I must warn you that sometimes it is very easy to over style this look. The key here is less is more, like this cool collection.
It wouldn't be Spring/Summer without a hint of the 1950s. The most flattering trend, it fits in all the right places, and particularly well in your new 2012 wardrobe. To work with all the other trends this season it is slightly more cutesy this time around. We're talking bows, candy colours, polka dots and nipped in waists of course.
A popular trend this season is also one you probably didn't expect to come around so fast. It's Nineties grunge. Think 'My so called Life' and 'Blossom' to name a few. Converse, Doc Martins and dungarees will feature heavily! Think slouchy fabrics, oversized cardigans, dipped hems, crop tops and A LOT of layering. Perfect for those days when you just feel like throwing on your old clothes. Quite literally!
